Great event at the Abrams Planetarium

Thank you to Shannon Schmoll, John French, and Shane Horvatin for hosting the ILN-MSU Fall Kick-Off event at the Abrams Planetarium last evening. We had a wonderful group of attendees from various units on campus. After the meal, networking time, and business meeting, Shannon provided an overview of the informal learning approach and work at the Planetarium. The group was then treated to a great program using the new full-color projection system, which included stars, planets, and a 3D model of a dinosaur who appeared on the dome!

An announcement was made about the new ILN-MSU Speaker Series, which starts on November 13, 2014.  Please join us for this new opportunity to learn more about the different ways people are doing informal education in our community!

Thank you to everyone who attended and made this a successful event.

Successful ILN-MSU Meeting at the MSU Main Library

The ILN-MSU meeting last night at the MSU Main Library was an early Valentine's Day success.

We enjoyed a presentation by Jill Morningstar, about the informal education resources at the Library and how staff members are working to improve use their use.  We then had a "networking" time, followed by a business meeting, during which we we discussed the organizational structure and bylaws draft.  Denice Blair will be working on revisions in response to the feedback (from the meeting and in emails from members) and getting something sent out to the membership next week.

We had five new people in attendance, including three MSU students.  Good discussions occurred, and several individuals were able to make connections related to their work.

A big thank you goes to our hosts, Holly Flynn and Jill Morningstar.  Thanks also to Mary Schueller who arranged the lovely refreshments.

Now is the time for us to begin planning the next event, which we anticipate will be the organization's "big" yearly meeting for 2013.  Please consider whether you are interested in hosting this event at your location.  (More details and potential dates to follow in an email.)

Keeping the Momentum Going

It's been almost a month now since the ILN-MSU kickoff event.  I've had some great conversations with people on campus, and our list of affiliates is growing.  We do need to make sure we keep the momentum going.  What are some ways to accomplish this task?

  • Join the ILN-MSU, if you haven't done so
  • Share information about the ILN-MSU with your colleagues
  • Think about ways that you would like to be involved

In the next month or so, we will be scheduling an event for early next year.  If you would like to host or co-host the event, please let Denice know.  Also, work is in progress for creating an ANGEL group to allow for better group communication.

As we move into the busy time at semester's end, I hope we can continue to discuss ways to shape this new organization and make decisions about how we will move forward.  Thank you for your support!

Kickoff Event a Success

Attendees gather in the MSU Museum lobby for the ILN meetingMany thanks to all of you attended the Informal Learning Nework kickoff event on Tuesday, October 16, 2012.  We gathered at the MSU Museum to meet each other and discuss the great future ahead for this organization.  Dr. Gary Morgan, the MSU Museum Director, provided an official welcome, followed by a welcome and overview of plans for the evening by coordinator Denice Blair Leach.  We then worked together to brainstorm ideas about the ILN-MSU before enjoying dinner and a talk by special guest Nancy Finegood, Executive Director of the Michigan Historic Preservation Network.  Many good suggestions were made about potential directions to take the ILN-MSU and ways we might make an impact on campus and beyond.  Several people described making new contacts for continued discussion or collaboration.

One important question asked to the organizational coordinator during the evening was "What do you need from us right now?"  Responses included ideas for the next event and ideas about how to shape the governance of the ILN-MSU.  Upon reflection, things people interested in helping can do also include: 1) sharing information and/or resources about your informal learning efforts for the ILN website, 2) talking to the coordinator about hosting the next event at your campus location, 3) continuing to get the word out to colleagues about the ILN, and 4) if you haven't joined, joining!

We look forward to getting to know each other better.  For those of you who couldn't attend, we look forward to seeing you at the next event or staying in touch via email or Facebook.  A compilation of the ideas generated during the discussions will be emailed to all who have given me their contact information.  (If you would like this information and are not sure if we have your email address, simply send a note via the contact form.)  Please let us know if you need any information or have questions.
